ESCARPMENT Tastes very well, balanced, full-flavoured, with just a little oak in behind. Young but already a very satisfying pinot style in a vintage where small quantities made the premium Kupe label unrealistic. Nicely soft and silky, unfolding very well. FELTON ROAD I have long thought Felton Road to be an excellent producer of Pinot Noir although the price has been getting up there. This opened with a bright colour and lovely cherry nose. The palate had the classic “sweet and sour” spectrum of flavours that I associate with Central Otago. Maybe even a little blackberry and crunchy acid style blueberry with the cherry. Great breadth of flavour that hangs about for some time. FELTON ROAD BLOCK 3 The review for this wine is qualified by the fact that it was brought to us by a customer who had opened the wine the previous night - we would expect a higher rating on a freshly opened bottle. None the less, even after a prolonged breath, it was an outstanding wine and a further testament as to the top quality of New Zealand Pinot Noir.Very deep plum red colour. The nose is a touch subdued, which we believe would not be the case in a freshly opened bottle. There is distinct varietal character which emerges, with aromas of cherry, spice and game. The palate is very impressive and displays the highly sought after Pinot flavour power wave. The flavour of Pinot, strawberries, cherries and liquorice are very dominant and displays outstanding length and concentration, which continues to build for several minutes into the aftertaste. Velvet smooth tannins. Powerful, cherry, liquorice and aniseed aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years.
