Pauwel Kwak's type of beer became a district beer in East Flanders, until it died out with the passage of time. Some years ago, it was revived by Bosteels. The brewery popularised the beer by serving it in a "stirrup cup" rather like yard of ale. As this has a rounded base, it has to be placed on the bar counter or cafe table in a supporting bracket. The presentation of such an elaborate device leaves no one in doubt as to which beer is being served. Kwak is a deep amber beer, with an earthy aroma; a licorice-like maltiness; a nougat chewiness; and a warm, finish reminiscent of caramelised bananas.
